Virginia Frograil Railfan Tour Map

A self-guiding railfan tour

1. NS Crescent Route. This is the Piedmont Division; the route of the ex-Southern and present Amtrak Crescent passenger trains between Washington, DC, and New Orleans. The tour is complete from Spartanburg, SC, all the way to Washington.

2. CSX East Coast. Several segments are completed between Northern New Jersey and Florida. The Virginia segments now complete are between the Potomac River and Lorton, and from Ashland thru Richmond to the Amtrak station in Petersburg (Ettrick).

3. Chesapeake & Ohio. This is the ex-C&O's heavy coal line. The tour is now completed between Williamsburg, Richmond, and Low Moor. Eventually, it will extend from Tidewater to Cincinnati.

4. N&W Main Line. The major coal route in the southeast, NS's West Virginia coal moves east to Tidewater and north to Sandusky. Eventually, this tour will extend all the way. For now, a good start has been recorded in south central Virginia

5. CSX Clinchfield Railroad. The entire Clinchfield tour has been completed, and Virginia's portion is spectacular.

6. N&W Pokey. This is on the Pocahontas Division tour in West Virginia, except for just a few miles where the line enters Virginia in Bluefield, and then re-enters WV just north of Falls Mills. Note that the line is not at all to scale or in the correct alignment -- it's too small a section of track to represent with any accuracy -- if it were accurate, we couldn't see it.

7.NS B-Line. This ancient line carries mostly modern hot intermodals from Harrisburg and the northeast between Front Royal and Manassas, and then the trains sprint south via the Piedmont Division to Atlanta and the south. The tour is complete.

8. Ex-Virginian. Used as the routing for loaded coal trains today, this line also sees are Roanoke - Linwood - Atlanta (and vice versa) traffic.

9. Ex-N&W and PRR -- Roanoke to Harrisburg. A portion of the Valley line between Shenandoah and Front Royal has been completed, a distance of about 43 miles. This tour is in its infancy.

10. Ex-Southern and N&W -- Bluefield to Knoxville. Completed between Bluefield and Cedar Bluff, and Saint Paul in the far western portion of the state, thru Natural Tunnel State Park, and into Tennessee at Frisco. The Tennessee portion of the tour is complete down to Knoxville. The entire tour is 67 miles, so far.

11.CSX Portsmouth Sub. Completed Suffolk - Garysburg, NC. Tour is about 50 miles, with additional locations to be examined and included as time goes by.
